Research Institute of Structural Engineering and Disaster Reduction (RISEDR), as one academic department of College of Civil Engineering, Tongji University, was founded by unifying the Shanghai Research Institute of Engineering Structures and the Research Institute of Structural Theories of Tongji University in October 1999. RISEDR currently consists of seven research divisions, one experimental center, an administration office, and four industry collaboration centers, including the Shanghai Engineering Research Center of Earthquake Energy Dissipation, the Research Center of Building Moving Technology of Tongji University, the Research Center for New Technology of Earthquake Resistance and Mitigation of Tongji University, and the Tongji-Yitong Technology Center. The editorial office for Journal of Structural Engineers is also headquartered in RISEDR.

RISEDR has 53 full-time faculty and staff, including 17 full professors, 14 associate professors, 5 assistant professors, 12 engineers, and 6 technicians and administrative assistants. By October 2012, RISEDR faculty published over 900 papers and obtained 36 awards and 26 patents. RISEDR started the graduate program in 1978. Both master and Ph.D. degrees are currently offered for Structural Engineering, Disaster Prevention and Reduction Engineering, and Wind Engineering. A new discipline of Civil Engineering, Engineering Disaster Prevention and Risk Management, was launched in 2006 as RISEDR's undergraduate program. An exchange double degree graduate program was developed recently between RISEDR and the Department of Civil Engineering, Feng Chia University, Taiwan, China.

The Structural Experimental Center of RISEDR is one of the important branches of the State Key Laboratory of Disaster Reduction in Civil Engineering. There are a total area of 4500 m2 lab space with the strong floor and three reaction walls (8m×8m, 8m×20m, and 15m×30m). Testing facilities include a 6-DOF shaking table testing system, a multi-functional hydro-server pseudo-dynamic testing system, damper performance testing frames, and various loading/measurement devices, as well as data acquisition and analysis software developed by the Center.

RISEDR establishes long-term collaborations with over ten prestigious universities and research institutes, such as the University of California at Berkeley, the University of British Columbia, the Tokyo University, the Tokyo Institute of Technology, and the Joint Research Centre of European Union. In 2008, RISEDR initiated an international academic conference series, the Kwang-Hua Forum, and since then civil engineering experts around the world are invited to join in this event host by RISEDR on Tongji University campus every year.
